Electronic ringer inside. The first suggestions for mounting a telephone transmitter and receiver on a common handle forming what is now known as a handset were made by two Englishmen, Charles A. MacEvoy and G.E.Pritchett in 1877. Handsets for customers use was introduced in France in about 1882 and spread quickly in Europe. One of the classic early telephone models was the "PROVENZALE" made by Systeme Berliner, a Paris company, combining art and technology. In the wooden base there were magnets for the telephone's generator, there was no dial, and the handle was used to call and ring the other phone. The Provenzale model also established the handset, allowing the user to speak and listen via the same piece of apparatus. The Provenzale was a great success.
